Abstract

This research will examine the operation of insurance companies and the granting of credit for them held in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro economies in the period between 1889 and 1914. In order to do so, it will be necessary to understand the movement of credit chains of these spaces, especially the credit given by the insurance companies, domestic and foreign, who have settled there. The investigation into the insurance business of these companies, as well as their financial and lending activities, will show how great their impact actually was in the Brazilian economic development then. The empirical research conducted so far by historiography proved to be relevant the hypothesis of credit activity have lived with the sale of insurance in this period.
