Abstract

Leishmaniasis is a set of clinical manifestations caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. With an estimated 12 million people infected, it is a public health problem, being considered one of the ten priority global epidemics. However, it has not an effective treatment, safe, easily manageable and economically viable. All drugs in use or advanced clinical stage have limitations such as toxicity, long treatment periods and high costs. Furthermore, it has been reported the development of resistance to many of these drugs. Consequently, the development of a new antileishmanial drug with better efficacy and safety is a medical need. Phenotypic screening assays show promising in the identification of compounds antileishmaniasis. However, there is much to optimize in the HCS platforms. The central objective of the project is to standardize testing for screening drugs against Leishmania sp. by HCS, thereby establishing a pipeline with robustness, high sensitivity, low variability and reliability, which will enable the screening of thousands of compounds continuously.
