Abstract

Geothermobarometry is an important tool to study intensive parameters of igneous rocks and understanding crystallization conditions, evolution and emplacement of magmas. Physical conditions such as temperature, pressure, oxygen fugacity, silica activity, NaCl activity can be rebuilt with the identification and chemical analysis of the magmatic paragenesis. The determination of these parameters in alkaline rocks is especially difficult, due to the lack of ideal paragenesis (e.g. quartz, ilmenite and magnetite may be missing) for calculation with the common geothermobarometers.Dr. Michael Marks and his research group are among the main researchers of the world that work with intensive parameters and phase equilibria of alkaline rocks, studding on classics alkaline complex, such as the Ilímaussaq in Greenland, Tamazeght in Morocco and Mont Saint-Hilaire in Canada. They have many published papers in several important geological journals. Therefore, a research internship with Dr. Michael Marks will be an important contribution to the development of this PhD project. The internship will be focused on the chemical analyses of specific textures with the objective of identifying the intensive parameters (temperature, oxygen fugacity, silica activity and NaCl activity) of different rock types from Itatiaia Alkaline Massif. The interpretation of the obtained results and their connection with the regional magmatism will result in diverse scientific papers that will be submitted to international geological journals.
