Abstract

In this project we intend to deepen the study about the relations between psychoanalysis and cinema considering Woody Allen's movies Manhattan (1977), Desconstructing Harry (1997), Whatever Works (2009) and Midnight in Paris (2011) as research objects. The research aims to construct the "neurotic" character, so recurrent at the director's filmography, using a selection of psychological elements commonly present at his movies. Furthermore, we will investigate the possibility of this character to be considered a cineaste’s double, thus avoiding a psychologist reading, which could be understood as alter ego or simply as an author's projection. For this purpose, implicated psychoanalysis will be used as a method, trying to understand the implications between the cinema viewer's unconscious and the work of art. Therefore, this study intends to contribute to the academic literature about psychoanalysis and cinema and collaborate with the critical collection of the director's work.
