Abstract

A recurrent pattern found in the fossil record is the replacement of entire clades by ecologically similar lineages. These phenomena suggest ecological interactions between taxa in different clades may interfere with the evolutionary dynamics of a given lineage. In this project we propose to develop diversification models that include mechanistic components likely to underlie these macroevolutionary patterns. Specifically, we intend to expand earlier diversification models by including niche overlap, asymmetry of interaction effects and variable equilibrium diversity. Then, we will examine the outcomes of these models under realistic parameterization and compare the results with empirical data. By doing so we will be able to generate theoretical expectations for macroevolutionary patterns under varying ecologically plausible scenarios. The study proposed here will contribute to the development of macroevolution and paleobiology by establishing a framework linking ecology and macroevolutionary dynamics. (AU)
