Abstract

The first version of the novel Quincas Borba - published in the journal A Estação, between 1886 and 1891 - internalizes aesthetic conceptions and problems of utmost importance for Machado de Assis. Among them, the concept of person that underlies the presentation of characters, modes of narration and instances of explicit dialogue in the text - the narrator and the projected reader. According to our hypothesis, these aesthetic aspects date from the literary debates that Machado was part as literary critic. In Quincas Borba's first version, there are an intensification of psychological analysis and thematizations of human psychology. Furthermore, volumes of Machado de Assis' personal library indicate his possible interest, since late 1870s, in works that approche this issue from a scientific point of view. Our research aims to show in which way the first version of Quincas Borba reworks longstanding questions of the literary debate, expressed as a response, at the aesthetic level, to the question of how literature can conceives and presents human and moral person and different forms of inscription of human psychology in novel form.
