Abstract Obesity is an important public health problem. It is the main characteristic of the metabolic syndrome and leads a reduced quality of life of obese individual. Need special attention in critical phases as it is in pregnancy and infancy. Pregnancy is process of the life cycle that promotes the biological vulnerability and the association with obesity increases the chance of the outcome of low birth weight and preterm newborn. There is evidence that maternal obesity promotes changes in the metabolism of the newborn that can lead to increased risk of the child developing obesity and other diseases during adulthood. The breast milk is an important modulator of the metabolism and the immune system of the child. Human milk has constituents in their composition with ability to influence the regulation of energy metabolism, such as adiponectin, leptin and melatonin. These bioactive substances also have activities on the functioning of immune cells. Literature data reported that obesity causes changes in the constituents that are present in breast milk, however it is not known how much obesity affects the action of mononuclear cells that are transmitted to the infant via colostrum. Therefore the objective of this study is evaluating the mechanisms involved in the activation of leukocytes of overweight and obesity women and the possible modulatory role of adiponectin, leptin and melatonin. | |
