Abstract

ABSTRACT: The establishment of the Inquisition in Portugal in the year 1536, in order to ensure the purity of the Catholic faith, begins a process to chase those who somehow performed, spoke or defended heresies, in which New Christians would be its main victims. Although the laws used to block Judaism, there are few examples of the continuation of the practicing of the ancient faith, but hidden and adapted to the possible limit. In this way, we note the new role of the women in the Jewish religion, in which in earlier moments they were on the sidelines of this religion, and the inquisition performance leaded them to change this position, taking a decisive role in resistance and formation of a possible Judaism. Even in convents, such practice were kept ongoing due to the fact that numerous new cloistered Christians used to come from the same family, finding a free place to keep practicing the Crypto learned in their families. This project aims to investigate the activities of the "Santo Ofício" of the Court of Lisbon concerning the nuns, by analyzing processes of misconduct, aspects related to the origins and spiritual mentality of the religious. In a second step, to present a comparative search about others courts of the Kingdom to verify the incidence of similar cases and the most often variation of this figures. Keywords: Portuguese Inquisition, New Christians, Portugal, Women, Nuns.
