Abstract

Bruxism has multifactorial etiology and deleterious effects, it can lead to tooth wear, muscular pain, tongue injuries and indentations, and others. This study aims to investigate maximum tongue pressure, oral stereognostic ability, sleep quality and quality of life in bruxers. Also, tongue volume and dental arch width will be evaluated in relation to maximum tongue pressure. Sixty volunteers will be selected at Piracicaba Dental School - University of Campinas (FOP/UNICAMP) and devided into two groups: subjects with (experimental) and without (control) sleep bruxism. Sleep bruxers will be chosen based on clinical evaluation and electromyography/electrocardiography analyzes. Then, the following variables will be evaluated: maximum tongue pressure (measured by pressure sensors), oral stereognostic ability (oral stereognosis), tongue volume (ultrasonography), dental arch width (measured from mandibular first molar from right to left), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; Epworth Sleepiness Scale) and the improvement in oral health-related quality of life (OHIP-14). For the second phase, half of the Experimental Group volunteers will receive occlusal splint therapy as bruxism treatment (n=15); and the other half will receive palatal splints as a placebo (n=15). All participants must use the splints at night. Thirty and sixty days after splints use, all the variables will be re-evaluated. The results collected will be submitted to exploratory analysis and subsequent appropriate statistical tests.
