Abstract

This research involves the creation of spectral libraries and spectroscopic characterization of soils contaminated with hydrocarbons (HCs) to improve methods and systems to monitor bare soils susceptive to be contaminated by HC leaks in petroleum refineries and pipelines. Experiments will develop under laboratory conditions, where controlled contaminations will be made aiming to simulate, in a small scale, soils contaminated by HC leaks. Spectral libraries and its spectroscopic characterization will be performed in the interval between 0,35 - 20 µm, covering the electromagnetic bands visible and infrared. The developed experiments should provide information to: (i) identify the spectral alterations yield in soil signatures due to the pollutant, (ii) establish concentration limits for the detection of the pollutant in the soil, (iii) generate simple statistical models to estimate the HC type and impregnation level involved in the contamination, (iv) assess the possibility of detect contaminated soils using digital information extraction techniques in remote sensing images. It is expected that this hypothesis will be demonstrate, the techniques and methods used here will have potential for operational leaks monitoring around refineries and pipelines.
