Abstract

Human interference has contributed to a significant increase in the occurrence of hybrid fish through breeding techniques, commonly used in the marketing of these animals. Among the main objectives of artificial hybridization is the search for a production of animals with better genetic performance, but its production can cause potential genetic risks, as fertile lineages, which may ultimately contaminate gene banks of the parental species. The identification and differentiation of hybrid species are essential for a better management of these animals. The use of cytogenetic techniques is one of the initial steps in this process, which is effective for both verification of ploidy levels and morphology of the chromosomes, such as the origin of parental chromosome complements of the resulting product in the hybridization. Given the great importance of the genus Astyanax as a model for studies on the variability of karyotype and cytogenetic markers, this paper aims to describe cytogenetically first of its kind hybrid individuals to obtain information on the karyotype and distribution of cytogenetic markers in hybrid individuals, these important contributions to the study of hybrid fish, genus Astyanax and validation of these hybrids as an experimental model study.
