Abstract

This research project aims at reviewing and questioning Narrative Medicine theoretical and methodological groundings, as they were constituted over the last fifteen years, starting from the epistemological loci of literature, philosophical hermeneutics and phenomenology and from the fundamental assumption of literature as a form of knowledge. The research will be conducted at the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (CEAUL-ULICES), in close connection with the Project Narrative & Medicine, hosted by the same institution, and will comprise: 1. a broad theoretical survey on Narrative Medicine, especially on the literature produced over the last ten years, at one of the cutting-edge international study centers in this field; 2. the selection and analysis of a narrative literary corpus written after the mid-XIX century, in Portuguese, thematically and/or formally related to the subjects of health and disease; 3. the witnessing, recording, transcription and analysis of clinical narratives in consultation contexts; 4. analysis and systematization of the results, aiming at an epistemic appreciation of literature in the field of health care; 5. preparation of an habilitation thesis and publication of the results.
