Abstract

The research on the election results in Brazil have focused their efforts on the political dynamics surrounding the dispute over the presidency. To understand that this position is of utmost importance not only for visibility, but for the intervention capacity in the national political reality, numerous empirical studies concerned to explain the observed results. In this context, the polarization of the dispute between PT and PSDB becomes central and all strategic actions taken by these parties are objects of evaluation for understanding this phenomenon. Is present in this discussion and in the public debate also an alleged programmatic change of PT's left of the political spectrum towards the center. This move would be a party victory of reason in the 2002 presidential election and its role as protagonist left in the country. To win the election, the PT would have taken a less extreme position like that which characterized his speech in the early years of the New Republic period. But this movement was not registered by studies evaluating the Brazilian presidential elections. There is a gap in this direction, and this paper intends to start raising necessary information to overcome this difficulty. (AU)
