Assessment of the incidence of postoperative chronic pain in patients undergoing surgery for treatment of musculoskeletal diseases

Abstract

In recent years the incidence of chronic postoperative pain (DCP) has increased, stimulating researchers to look for etiological and pathophysiological factors that may cause its arising. The DCP, according to the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), is the pain present for more than two or three months after completion of a surgical procedure. This study aims to evaluate the incidence of DCP in patients undergoing surgery for treatment of musculoskeletal diseases, specifically of knee, hip and spine. Risk factors for the DCP, as well as its occurrence are also studied. The search will be performed in parallel to another study approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the institution and which is already being implemented. The questionnaire "45 and up", adapted to the Brazilian reality and the objectives of this study at the Hospital of the Botucatu Medical School, will be used to collect the data. Besides this questionnaire, three other will be used for the evaluation of intra- and post-operative periods, as well as the period spent in the post-anesthetic recovery room. The presence of chronic postoperative pain will be recorded in the periods: one month and then at 3, 6 and 12 months after the surgery.
