Abstract

The growth of Brazilian industrial sector in the last decade, has sued the manufacture of high volume machines and metal parts. As a result, production of molten metal is increased and accompanied by the generation of large volumes of waste. The most common casting process uses natural sand, mixed with organic and inorganic binders, to shape the molds that shape metal parts. After a number of casting cycles, the sand has no more appropriate characteristics for its use in the industry and becomes the main residue of steel. Thus, the residual foundry sand (RFS) should be discarded in landfills licensed to high costs. Researchers and engineers have sought alternatives to reuse this waste in construction activities. In this research, the main objective is to evaluate the possibility of reusing the residual foundry sand in building layers of bases and sub-bases of low volume traffic floors, in association with soil and stabilizing agents.
