Abstract

Despite the great urban transformations occurred during the last decades at the city of São Paulo, largely focused on car use which disregard pedestrians and cyclists, it is noticed the lack of good public spaces at the urban context. It is build a city that disfavors the meetings between citizens, the open spaces between the congested streets, the enclosure inside and outside the architecture. Considering such issues, this research proposes a study case of a private architectural complex, which has public use: the multifunctional Brascan Century Plaza. The objective is understand by the analysis of its characteristics the impact that the complex had both in the design phase and after the implementation for the population that frequents it and the neighborhood in which it operates: Itaim Bibi. This Project is linked to a broader research called "Os espaços públicos e o arquiteto: um estudo comparativo em São Paulo e Londres das funções do designer na produção dos espaços públicos durante os anos 1960/70 e hoje", developed by Universidade de São Paulo and Royal College of Art, from London.
