Abstract

Recently, irgarol and diuron have been the most commonly used biocides in antifouling paints and their main impact is related to its presence in the aquatic environment and ecological risks of adverse biological effects on non-target species. Data on the toxicity of these compounds are known but studies evaluating specific responses such as endocrine activity are limited. The main goal of this research project is to assess potential effects of the antifouling biocides irgarol and diuron on endocrine responses of the marine hornyhead turbot Pleuronichthys verticalis exposed to environmental concentrations of both compounds. In vitro bioassays will be applied to screen endocrine activity of the biocides and then, changes in expression of genes involved in the endocrine pathways will be investigated. The results of this research will be important to understand disturbances endocrine system of fish related to exposure of environmental concentration of antifouling biocides. (AU)
