Abstract

Vertebrate fauna from Solimões Formation (upper Miocene) has been extensively studied. A rich fauna of mollusks (gastropods and bivalves), mammals, reptiles, birds and angiosperms trunks have been discovered in the past few decades. However, few of these studies aimed to understand taphonomic aspects of those fossil deposits. Geochemical investigations in biomineralized tissues have been an important tool of archaeological and paleontological analysis, giving reliable information about taphonomy, paleoecology and paleoenvironments. The main goal of this project is apply geochemical techniques on fossils, collected with rigorous taphonomic protocols, from paleontological sites of Solimões Formation using the rare earth elements (REE) geochemistry and oxygen isotopes analysis, aiming to elucidate fossil diagenesis and for paleoenvironmental reconstructions.
