Abstract

This research project aims to contribute to the development of indicators related to the Public Perception of Science and Technology (PPS&T), realizing that the perception of society on issues associated to science and technological innovation is core to the progress of any countries. Seeking alternatives to the current indicators which are already saturated, this project focuses on the Value Theory - of the social psychologist Shalom Schwartz - as a model that can help to understand practices and attitudes adopted by individuals. Schwartz et al. (2012) conceptualizes "values" as the guiding principles of actions, assessments, choices and human attitudes. Under this methodology, the goal is to build, implement and validate a questionnaire in order to analyze how "individual values" (according to Schwartz's theory) contribute to and/or motivate the adoption of certain attitudes towards Science and Technology (S&T). Thus, the project in question proposes the use of the Schwartz´s model as an indicator of PPS&T, suggesting that this relation can support the elaboration of a critical reflection on the interests of individuals towards S&T.
