Abstract

Under acidic conditions, malate efflux via TaALMT1 channel is induced by aluminum (Al) in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). When Al is chelated with organic acids, the roots are allowed to grow normally, thus conferring great yields. Recent studies suggest that great yield in an Al-tolerant wheat line can also be reached under alkaline conditions by the same organic acid exsudation mechanism (via ALMT channel). Considering these opposite standpoints about TaALMT1, the aim of this study is to evaluate the functioning of this channel by assessing the malate efflux in root apices of wheat seedlings under a pH range (5 to 9) in different soil and nutrient solutions.
