Abstract

The protection of electrical power system elements is very important considering abnormal operating conditions and electrical faults to which it may be subjected. Among the equipment to be protected, the generators are highlighted because they represent a high investment cost and the fact that front unscheduled stoppages results in financial losses and cause impact on the operation of the Electric Power System (EPS). Thus, based on literature, it is observed that there are no comprehensive studies for individual protection of generators applied to wind power. Therefore, it is necessary to study and analyse the behavior of wind turbines against fault situations, knowing that the protection scheme is dependent on the generator type and the way it is connected to the EPS. In this context, this MSc project aims to study and develop a protection scheme for Synchronous Generators (SGs) applied to wind power, taking into account the concept of smart grids. In this sense, this paper proposes a simulation of various fault conditions in the wind turbines, focusing on the analysis of SGs connected to the EPS through power converters. To conduct such simulations, a Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) will be used. This equipment will allow the reproduction of the actual electrical system conditions, as well as closed loop simulations for testing and evaluation of the adjusted protection system. Improvements concerning the protection function is expected. (AU)
