"Do not fear": a visionary culture in Portugal and their practices and representations in Brazil (1917 - 1942)

Abstract

With our researching project, we aim to understand how it developed a visionary culture in Portugal, focusing mainly on the apparitions of Nossa Senhora de Fátima since May, 1917. The events were used to legitimize the recatolization discourses of society and Lusitanian institutions with international reach during the year 1930. For this, we look at how the Catholic intellectuals promoted the inclusion of political issues, represented the "danger" communist and the formation of an authoritarian government, in messages attributed to Fatima and other apparitions reported in the first half of the twentieth century.Since the preparation of a comparative history, we understand how the cult of Fatima was inserted in Brazil, from immigration to the Company's members of Jesus, as part of a cultural mission in the first half of the twentieth century. At this point, we will analyze how the practices of orthopraxy entered on the Marian cult were instrumental in organizing a visionary culture and the legitimacy of the discussions that sought rapprochement of political and ecclesiastical spheres in both countries.With a focused approach to the Cultural History of Religions, we aim to understand how the work of members of the Company of Jesus was central to the shaping, legitimacy and internationalization of the cult of Fatima. For this, it is important to understand the actions of the Jesuits as part of an international project to restructure the Catholic Church. (AU)
