Cytotoxicity and mutagenicity evaluation of ethanol and methanol extracts of Cymbopogon citratus, Lippia alba and Melissa officinalis, in Ehrlich tumor cells, in vitro

Abstract

The use of medicinal plants increases daily, as the population looks for natural alternative of diseases treatment and improvement of life quality. Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf, Lippia alba (Mill.) NE Brown and Melissa officinalis L. are the three lemon balm species most commonly used in Brazilian folk medicine. The present study aims to evaluate the cytotoxic and genotoxic potentials of ethanol and methanol extracts of C. citratus, L. alba and M. officinalis in Ehrlich tumor cells, in vitro. It will be held cytotoxicity analysis by Trypan Blue Exclusion Method and genotoxicity by comet assay in cells obtained from Ehrlich tumor; which will receive the following treatments: a) peritoneal cells of animals not inoculated with Ehrlich tumor without treatment (control); b) tumor cells without treatment (tumor control); c) tumor cells treated with methanol extract of C. citratus; d) tumor cells treated with ethanol extract of C. citratus; e) tumor cells treated with methanol extract of L. alba; f) tumor cells treated with ethanol extract of L. alba; g) tumor cells treated with methanol extract of M. officinalis; h) tumor cells treated with ethanol extract of M. officinalis. The treatments will be carried out at a final concentration of 1000¼g / mL and the experiments will be conducted in sextuplicate, for both two tests.
