Abstract

During this period of research at Georgetown University, I intend to (1) survey and study the bibliography on myths in the extant fragments of Stesichorus and Ibycus, (2) to compare the treatment of myth in their own verses with the mythical narratives of epic poems of Homer and the Epic Cycle, and (3) to write commentaries on the following fragments: Stesichorus (Helen 187-191, 192-193; The Trojan Horse and The Sack of Troy S88-147, 196-205; Nóstoi 208, 209?; Oresteia 210-214; The Funeral Games of Pelias 178 -180; Heracles & S8-87 184, 206, 207, 220; narratives of the Theban Cycle S148-194, S195 and Meleager 221-222, 222 (a) Davies); Ibycus (S151 Troy, Helen 296, Heracles 285, 298-300; Meleager 290; the Argonauts 291, 301; Nóstoi 282, 293-297; Ganymedes and Tithonius 289; Troilus 282 and 284 Endimion Davies). The commentary will seek to develop further the current discussions on the performance, matter, function and the handling of myths in the verses of Stesichorus and Ibycus, comparing them to each other and to the mythical narratives of the Ionian epic poetry.
