Abstract

The prevalence of epilepsy is 0.5 to 1% in developed countries. It is estimated that 20 to 30% of pediatric patients are refractory to pharmacological treatment. The ketogenic diet (KD) consists of a dietary treatment adjunct to pharmacological treatment prescribed to children and adolescents with refractory epilepsy. Diet composition is based on high level of fat, low-carbohydrate and moderate protein content. In the literature, several studies have shown that high consumption of PUFAs fats can positively modulate seizure control, so the present study will evaluate the profile of dietary fatty acids consumed in KD and measure the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the membrane of erythrocytes and their impact on controlling seizures in children and adolescents under dietary treatment for refractory epilepsy. The evaluation of the composition of fatty acids consumed in KD will be made by analysis of food records of three days in the time prior to the start of KD (T0) and after six months of treatment with the KD (T1) through the software "Food Processor". The lipid profile will be analyzed using Cobas system using commercial kits, and incorporation of dietary fatty acids will be analyzed by the system High performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). All statistical tests will be analyzed with the program Statistical Package for the Social Siences® (SPSS) revision 20.0. (AU)
