Abstract

Vibro-acoustic leak signals vary from case to case depending mainly on the type of pipe used, intensity of leakage and dynamic characteristics of the measuring points. Moreover, resonances related to the water distribution system may cause errors when taken into account in calculating the estimated position of the leak. Another important factor in the correct location of the leak is the estimate of their speed of propagation of the wave. This project has three main goals. The first aims to characterize typical plastic pipes in Brazil to obtain the frequency range in which the energy of the leak is contained, the rate of attenuation of leak noise as it propagates through the pipe. The second objective is to investigate the feasibility of measuring the speed of leak noise propagation in-situ. A prototype of a sensor-actuator device will developed and tested in the laboratory and the field, and its sensitivity to different points of attachment will be determined. The ultimate aim is to embed the new system in a new prototype correlator which will be tested in the field. (AU)
