Abstract

This proposal primarily concerns a study into the way in which amplitude distortion of leak noise signals from a buried plastic water pipe, affects the time delay estimate calculated from the correlation of leak noise signals measured either side of the leak. The study will involve the development of an analytical model of a pipe and sensors coupled with a clipping mechanism for the signals. The predictions from the analytical model will be compared with numerical simulations and experimental data. The aim is to determine whether it is necessary to have gain control in the leak noise correlator currently under development by the team in UNESP Ilha Solteira, or whether fixed gain signal conditioning will be adequate. A further aim of the project is to develop the design of a pipe test rig in Brazil. (AU)
