Abstract

We intend, in this Project, to study and implement computational schemes to minimize the mass of trussed metal structures of aerospace vehicles, under self-weight and aerodynamic loadings. Mass minimization is optimization problem. We will develop computational algorithms using the Microsoft Excel Solver. The design variables are the diameter and wall thickness of the tubular members of the trusses. The objective function is the total mass of the structure. The constraint equations are related to the strength of the materials and member buckling. We consider our trussed structures as statically determined and use the node equilibrium method for the solution of the member axial forces. Whenever necessary, the Finite Element Method will also be used. Comparison of results will lead to the definition of the best designs. As a result of this project, at least one research paper will be published and data will be open to interested academic and industrial researchers. (AU)
