Abstract

Fossil freshwater fishes from Northern South America have proved to be key in our current understanding of the mode and tempo of both drainage and biotic evolution during the Neogene. They have provided strong evidence of past connections between cis- and trans-Andean drainages and have been the base of a vicariant model for explaining the relationship between groups of fishes inhabiting both areas. However, my recent findings from Northern Colombia require a reassessment of tempo for the separation betweendrainages during the Neogene as they imply that such areas might still have been connected during the late Pliocene. Such new data open a window formajor reinterpretation of the history of diversification of neoropical freshwater fishes. They also provide a unique opportunity to apply new analytical techniques as point estimation of drainage separation and molecular-clock estimations. The present proposal aims at undertaking two major phases of this research, namely the examination of fossil specimens, and the training and development of the analytical tools to be used to integrate paleontological temporal information with recent data on phylogenetic relationships and geographical distribution.
