Abstract

This research aims to explore repertoires of action and urban practices that promote new ways society can appropriate its public spaces in the city, through social interventions and cultural mediations that seek to restructure, requalify, to create new uses and symbolic rehabilitation of these areas, encouraging social change and citizenship.The research has its field bordered by interventions that occur through social engagement and cultural practices, with or without support of the government, being the society participation a prerequisite for its realization.The research proposes to study urban actions and interventions that occur through social engagement and cultural practices, with or without government support. The main prerequisites is that these interventions count with community´s participation and that they produce a new and long-term ownership relation between this community and the public areas in which these actions occurred.The subject is relevant and has gained notoriety in recent years in several areas of knowledge such as architecture, urban planning, social sciences, communication and arts, seeking to reflect on the use of public spaces to promote citizenship, stronger bonds within the community and a new and refreshed relationship between the population and the city itself.
