Abstract

This project aims to research the constitution of political agents' network in the Spanish Monarchy during the civil and religious conflicts in France, specially between the period of 1580-1598, responsible of news and ideas circulation, with the goal to understand which images of the monarchy were been elaborated by these men. We start with the assumption that the knowledge and information scope were fundamental to the conduction of Philip II`s foreign policy during his last ten years of ruling. From the documentation analysed, we intend to investigate the political ideias elaborated by these agents, with emphasis on the construction of the reason of state's speech. Thereby we will research the relation bewteen these set of ideias and the wide political theory, we mean, considering the political treatises, to understand how the theory and practice are connected according to the intelectual challenges emerged by the violence of the religious wars in France and the needy of a mediation that discuss the religious toleration. By the other side, the conflict´s intensity put in question the art of govern, provoking a new reflection on politcs informed by rawness of practical and experience of ruling. This turbulent context was that of dissemination of the ideia of the reason of state, a speech which, a priori, seems to endorse the sovereign´s decisions in the name of the state's salvation. However, in practice, this speech had demonstrated to being flown and fragmented, used to endorse several and different goals, for exemple, it was mobilized by both catholics and protestants to stress their causes. The study of this process is the goal of the research.
