Abstract

The stay in France refers to the fulfillment of a stage of the project, where I plan to search the Ministry of collections of Foreign Affairs of the French National Library and the Santa Genoveva Library (Fund Ferdinand Denis). In this 4-month research stay I seek to study the deepening of Franco-Brazilian relations in the nineteenth century, from the network which included artists and intellectuals who have taken root in Brazil, along with an intense movement of travelers and their stories. Supported by scientific and cultural institutions and their writings dissemination tools, these connections were essential to the consolidation of the monarchy and the literary field sketch in Brazil, and the formulation of a first national imagination, strongly supported the Crown. These studies also aim to clarify some dimensions of political and literary activity of the French branch of Taunay family, work which we hope will be illuminated by closer examination of family correspondence of Taunays present in the Paulista Museum. Taking up research being intermittently developed in recent years, we think we can in the light of the vast material collected in the museums, to assess the relationships maintained by branches "French" and "Brazilian" family, throughout the nineteenth century. A second dimension of the research stay would be to seek to understand the developed controversies in the intellectual and journalistic means French during the Paraguayan War and contributed to the country's image building that difficult time of international politics, also marked the end of civil war in the United States and by the Second French Empire crisis and the emergence of the Third Republic.. cultural mediations come here a special relief, since the campaign against the Brazilian position in France was headed by some figures in the world of French-speaking, who had been in Brazil and written about the country in previous decades, as the writer and polemicist Charles Expilly and scholar BELCA Auguste von der Strahten Ponthoz. Still in critical shed the Brazilian position is important to mention the need to further investigate the relationship between Elisee Reclus and members of Taunay family, particularly Alfredo himself, remembering that the great anarchist geographer was a major "interpreters" of Brazil's role during the War of Paraguay, in the Revue des Deux Mondes. A third dimension, to try to understand the critical fortune of the work of Alfredo Taunay ma France, particularly the Laguna Withdrawal, which suffer readings not only marked by controversy spread among French scholar during the Paraguayan War, but by the European political situation. The research should consult the collections, the Biblioteque National de France, the Biblioteque Sante Geneviève (Ferdinand Denis collection) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE). This set of sources refers to the study of Taunay branches of the family who returned to France and its dialogue with the Brazilian branch., The editorial strategies related to the critical fortune of the works of Alfredo Taunay, from the very Retraite de la Lagune and the work itself Affonso Taunay in connection with the French branch of the family.
