Abstract

The research grant requested is intended to support the transcription, technical review and analysis of a set of handwritten sources from the Taunay Collection of Museu Paulista (USP). They refer to "intimate writings" (5 volumes of Memórias do Visconde de Taunay (1890-1891), 5 Cadernos de Diários (1884-1896). The documentary set will be questioned as a "system of narratives", supported by different genres and supports, which include writings of a memorialist nature published in life, those left for posthumous publication (the memories entrusted to the custody of the IGHB) and the intermittent diaries not intended by the author for publication. Special attention will be given to the selection and editing work carried out by his son, the historian Afonso d'Escragnolle Taunay (1876-1958), legatee of his collection and participant in what we consider a "memory project." We will try to understand the historiographical operation that develops in this convergence, not free of conflicts between father and son. son. These conflicts develop in the transition from the Monarchy to the Republic, boosting the autobiographical writings and impregnating the very writing of the history that develops in beginning of the republican period, in Brazil.
