Abstract

In studies of Stability to the Dynamic Safety Analysis of Electric Power Systems (EPS), the Voltage Stability Margin (VSM) is measured as the difference between the point of maximum load (nose PV curve and set to Saddle-Node Bifurcation (SNB)) and the current load. However, this margin may not accurately reflectthe true limits of system load when it does not consider oscillatory instability due to Hopf Bifurcation (HB) (Loss of the Small-Signal Stability). This occurs when these studies are done in simplified static models that do not exhibit this type of instability mechanism. Therefore, studies considering only the simplified static modeling in the voltage stability (VS) analysis, despite being suitable for a portion of problems that may exist in an EPS, are not applicable to other significant portion of this set of phenomena. Therefore, inview of this argument, this PhD project proposes innovations in studies related to voltage stability in EPS, from two aspects. To this end one of the goals of this project is jointly to evaluate Voltage and Small-SignalSafety Margins of an EPS, from the development of a unified procedure. In other words, the proposal is to develop a method that can calculate a single margin of safety already contemplating SNB and HB. In addition,information of electrical quantities provided by Phasor Measurement Units will monitor the EPS and provide indicative of precision in the current estimate of the safety margin. To develop and to evaluate these margins of accuracy rates are also project objectives. This information will indicate the need to recalculate this margin to a new operating scenario. As a result of the PhD project, it is expected the development of fast and efficient tools of EPSs analysis.
