Abstract

This research aims to analyze dialogically a set of 25 posters produced by UNICEF with Maurício de Sousa about child and youth rights, from a Bakhtinian perspective of discourse studies. Discussions about this subject, in Brazil, were intensified after the promulgation of the 1988 Constitution, since it made possible the passing of the Law 8.069/90, known as Child and Youth Statute (Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente/ECA). It is a human rights document that aims to ensure, under the law, the protection of the population younger than 18, allowing a greater possibility of intervention by the State with that objective. Since the promulgation of ECA - 25 years ago in 2015 - many efforts are being done by NGO's as well as by the government itself so that this law is actually enforced, since practice is always more challenging than theory. The posters that we intend to analyze fit exactly in those attempts to implement a law that has been approved so many years ago. Maurício de Sousa, a well-known Brazilian cartoonist, received in 2007 the title of "UNICEF Writer for Children", which gave even more recognition to the social work he had already been doing with his characters from Monica's Gang. The main goal of this research is to investigate the materialization of ideological values in the posters that involve the issue of Child and Youth Rights, departing from the assumption that those values are materialized in a specific speech genre: the institutional publicity. It is also within our interests to answer other questions: Who is the expected receiver of the posters? Considering verbal-visual aspects of the corpus, how are childhood and adolescence represented? From which spheres come the discourses that appear on the posters and how do they materialize? How do the posters respond to social discourses about Child and Youth Rights in Brazil? The adopted theoretical perspective comprehends works regarding The Bakhtin Circle, especially the ones developed in Brazil that take as object of study the concrete enunciation in relation with speech genres, ideologies, alterity, ethics and aesthetics in the production of meaning. The research is qualitative and interpretative. The proposals of dialogical discourse analysis by Brazilian researchers were chosen as methodological procedures to be applied. (AU)
