Abstract

This current project of exchange program aims at investigating the idiomatic characteristics of the Brazilian composer Gilberto Mendes in his Music Theater's work. It is intended to observe the relations between Music and Theater created by him in works from different periods and features, and thereby understands his compositional language to the genre. For this effect, we will be based on the methodology proposed by the Portuguese musicologist, singer and performer Maria João Serrão in her book Methodology of Theater/Music Works Analysis (2011), a unique work regarding the analysis of such compositions. We intend to develop this research internship under Mrs. Serrão's supervision in CESEM (Sociology and Musical Aesthetics Research Center), located at New University of Lisbon, taking into account the quality of the researches carried out in that center. We consider Maria João Serrão's supervision essential to the development of this research stage. It will contribute, on one hand, to the introduction of her analytical tool to Brazilian musicology field and, on the other, to the insertion of Gilberto Mendes in the field of Portuguese and European Music Theater.
