Abstract

In industrial processes, mathematical modeling has a crucial role because it is necessary to find optimal operating conditions, and determining control strategies. Models which describe the kinetics of enzymatic hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse are found in the literature. However, their parameters commonly vary as changes occur in the process conditions such as, compositional variations in raw material, pre-treatment type, and enzyme used. So, to obtain a robust model, its parameters must be frequently re-estimated, which is a time consuming procedure when a large number of parameters are involved. To solve this problem, the parametric sensitivity analysis will be used to identify the most relevant parameters on the responses: glucose, cellulose and cellobiose concentrations. For this purpose, each parameter will be varied at 5, 10 and 20%, according to a Plackett-Burman matrix, and the effects will be determined at different reaction times. The idea is to define the best variation in the parameters to be used in sensitivity analysis, and determine the relevance of the parameters in the profiles. In new re-estimation procedures, the less sensitive parameters will be fixed, and the remaining will be estimated. This strategy potentially reduces the time required in parametric updating.
