Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) connects a variety of different devices, which can interact for improving our experience with the surrounding environment. Smart Cities have important applications for IoT, putting together low power and low cost sensors and actuators, unrestrictive access to wireless communications and the involvement of the population by using applications in smartphones. There are protocols and middleware platforms for the particular needs of IoT applications, but important issues related to their performance and scalability are still not well understood. The general goal of this project proposal is to increase the existing knowledge about protocols, systems, platforms and architectures for IoT. Although IoT is currently a technological hype, it has been developed and deployed using a tacit knowledge coming from other research areas and there is no clear distinction among the best practices for using protocols (such as MQTT and CoAP), architectures (centralized or distributed) and platforms for streamlining the development of IoT applications (such as IMPReSS).
