Abstract

Cancer is among the diseases with highest mortality rates worldwide. In Brazil, for the years 2016 and 2017 it is expected more than 500.000 new cases of cancer, and among all types, breast cancer is the most prevalent in women. Treatments for this disease are radiation, surgery, hormone therapy and chemotherapy, which is the most used treatment. However, chemotherapy generates discomfort to the patients due to the side effects generated from its poor selectivity for tumor cells. An alternative for cancer treatment is the use of natural products, given that currently about 60% of drugs in clinical trial phase are originated from natural products or their derivatives. Acetogenins (ACG) are a class of secondary metabolites extracted from Annona mucosa, that are found in tropical and subtropical regions. Literature demonstrates its effectiveness against various diseases, including cancers. Therefore, the objective of this project is to analyze the effect of an ACG, the rolliniastatina on morphology and proliferation of breast tumor cell line, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, and also in a non-tumor cell line MCF-10A. Moreover, this study will verify the effects of ACG on migration, colony formation, cell cycle and apoptosis in the tumor cell lines to produce knowledge that can be the basis for designing new antitumor compounds.
