Abstract

Currently there is a growing concern about the use of pesticides, as these are harmful to the environment and human health. Alternaria alternata cause rot in postharvest tomato and has limited its commercialization, furthermore produce mycotoxins harmful to human health. Their control is most of the times with the use of fungicides, which contributes to the need for development of new alternatives that are healthy and better accepted by the community. An alternative is the biological control of Alternaria alternata, which contributes to the reduction or even the complete replacement, the use of synthetic fungicides. Yeasts have been studied because they have characteristics that make them suitable as biocontrol agents in fruit. The objectives of this project are to evaluate the possible interactions between yeast strains Meyerozyma guilliermondii (3C98) and Trichosporon asahii (3S44) and the fungi Alternaria alternaria in biological control and identify the possible mechanisms of action of yeasts as biological control agents of Alternaria alternata in tomatoes. The project includes in vitro experiments that will evaluate the antagonism of yeasts against phytopathogen in the same plate and possible control mechanisms as production of antifungal compounds by yeasts, mycelial growth in antagonism area, competition for glucose and Fe3+ ions. In vivo experiments will evaluate the control of the incidence of the disease in differents concentrations of yeast and competition for glucose and Fe 3+ ions. With results expected more knowledge about the mechanisms of action of the yeast strains 3C98 and 3S44 and its potential in the control of Alternaria alternata, enabling a sustainable alternative in the future.
