Abstract

The importance of intra-abdominal pressure and the repercussions of its variations over equine morbidity and mortality only were brought to attention a bit more than a decade ago. However, the results so far have not been encouraging and the repercussions of intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartmental syndrome in this species are still mere speculations. This is mainly due to the impossibility of estimating intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) in this species through indirect methods, in similarity to what is routinely performed in human medicine. With this in mind, we seek to correlate intra-abdominal pressure directly (invasively)-obtained with intrabladder pressure of horses. For that purpose, at least 10 adult horses, male (either stallion or gelding) and female, weighting between 350 and 500kg and with 3.5 to 12 years, absent from any disease of the gastrointestinal or urinary tract will be used as subjects in our study. Clinical examination and complete blood count will precede inclusion on the study, and elective surgeries not related to the gastrointestinal or urinary tract will be criteria for inclusion, with owner consent. Intra-abdominal pressure will be recorded through midline insertion of a teat cannula connected to a fluid-filled system used for monitoring central venous pressure (CVP). Intrabladder pressure will be recorded by using a methodology described and validated for this purpose in humans. The subjects will be kept in supine position or lateral recumbency under general anesthesia. (AU)
