Safety of thyroidectomy without drain

Abstract

The major complications associated with surgery of the thyroid and parathyroid glands are damage to nerves (laryngeal recurrent or recurring external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve), hypoparathyroidism and complications of the surgical approach. Several studies have failed to show any benefit from routine cervical drainage in this surgery, and the aim of this study is to evaluate the need for drain use after thyroidectomy. A prospective, randomized interventional study will be performed. The inclusion criteria are for this study are patients undergoing partial or total thyroidectomy aged between 18 and 70 years and both genders will be held. During surgery, patients that will or not receive cervical drain will be determined by raffle. The data that will be collected are: the indication for thyroidectomy, the surgery performed (partial or total), complications (infection, seroma, bleeding, hematoma, laryngeal paralysis and hypoparathyroidism), pain and discomfort postoperatively, need of re-operation for hematoma drainage and / or tracheotomy and the length of hospital stay. An ultrasound examination will be performed after 24 hours of surgery to assess the volume of fluid collected in the surgical wound in patients in both groups. (AU)
