Abstract

This project consists of the analysis of a proposal of an internal combustion engine with adjustable compression ratio and cubic capacity. By controlling the compression ratio it is possible to obtain a higher efficiency at partial loads, since the pressure in the cylinder at the admission stroke is lower, allowing a higher compression of the gasses without the risk of knock. Besides that, different fuel requires different compression ratio range, what characterizes one of the greatest challenge in the developing of multi fuel engines. By controlling the cubic capacity by altering the stroke length of the piston it is possible to reduce the power develop by the engine and therefore avoiding the pump losses induced by the closing of the throttle. It is believed that the mechanism permits the optimized operation of the engine by adjusting a set of parameters such as compression ration, cubic capacity and ignition point, reducing the fuel consumption. This analysis will be executed by obtaining the operational maps of the engine with computational simulations. Those maps will show data about indicated power, thermal efficiency and maximum compression ratio, limited by the occurrence of knock, for diverse conditions of load, cubic capacity and engine speed. Also will be carried out a comparison between the proposed engine with a conventional engine, i.e., with fixed compression ratio and cubic capacity, highlighting the advantages and drawbacks of the proposed solution. Thus it is required to develop a reliable computational model of the engine, which can estimate the performance of the engine as also predict the occurrence of knock, therefore the model must be calibrated with experimental data obtained from a prototype of the proposed engine. The work described is part of the project FAPESP/PCBA 13/50238-3 of the Research Centre on Engineering "Prof. Urbano E. Stumpf" and it is corresponded to the activity 7.4.5. (AU)
