Abstract

Currently there is a great deal of interest in developing structural health monitoring (SHM) systems for aeronautical structures. The goal is to enhance reliability and the structure lifespan, as well as reducing maintenance costs in airplanes. In the long term, it is predicted the distribution of sensors along the airplane structure during its construction, which allows for collecting information about the structure state in real-time throughout its lifespan. This research proposal is part of the collaboration between the EMBRAER aircraft company and the Escola Politécnica da USP. The objective is the development of methods for damage classification in structures from acoustic emission signals. It is intended to develop and assess the performance of a classifier that should be able to recognize noise, cracks and rivets breaks in metallic structures. Considering the interest in sensor networks embedded in an airplane structure, it is also desirable to develop distributed algorithms that may be used to classify signals from acoustic emissions. As part of the project, EMBRAER will provide extra funds to complement the student's scholarship, as long as this proposal is granted. (AU)
