Water quality diagnosis and landscape analysis in a stretch of the River Tietê (municipalities of Barra Bonita and Igaraçu do Tietê): emphasis on multiple uses

Abstract

The urbanization resulted in major impacts to the environment, and water bodies a strongly impacted compartment by pollution and contamination caused by human activities, which can impact public health by the poor quality of life. The municipalities of Igaraçu do Tietê and Barra Bonita (SP) are settled on the banks of the river Tietê that is used by all the population for primary and secondary contact uses. Barra Bonita does not have sewage treatment and illegal connections of sewage flow into nearby recreation areas used by the population. In 2015, the water quality of the region was classified as bad, revealing that the primary contact uses are inadequate. Whereas the water quality classification is crucial for the uses that can occur, there is a need to monitor these environments to ensure safety to the community. The objectives of this work are: monitor water quality in the Tietê stretch that includes these municipalities by applying water quality indexes and bathing, check the literature for the occurrence of waterborne diseases, identify the multiple uses in the stretch to be studied and draw up a map of land use and occupation identifying the degree of hemerobia on the study area.
