Abstract

The purpose of this study will be to investigate the effects of hydroxyurea (HU) used in the treatment of sickle cell anemia (SCA) on the oral microbioma. Forty children aged 6 to 14 years divided into 4 groups: G1 (10 patients with SCA at the beginning of treatment with HU), G2 (10 patients with SCA and under treatment with HU for 3 months), G3 (10 patients with SCA and under treatment with HU for 6 months) and G4 (10 systemically healthy children, paired-control). This will be a longitudinal study and the bacterial oral microflora will be also analyzed by Human Oral Microbe Identification using Next Generation Sequencing (HOMINGS) in children under HU therapy and control. The results will be analyzed by appropriate statistical tests (±=0.05).
