Abstract

The genetic variability within and between populations is a key parameter in evolution and conservation biology. This project aims to genetically characterize through microsatellite markers two local populations of Leporinus fasciatus from the Jari River. We aim to: (1) extract genomic DNA of at least 30 specimens of L. fasciatus collected in points below and above the Santo Antonio waterfall (local populations); (2) estimate the gene frequencies of local populations by the analysis of at least 10 polymorphic microsatellite locus; (3) Compare genetically local populations above and below the Santo Antônio waterfall, looking to test the hypothesis of occurrence of panmixia; (4) propose activities that can maintain genetic variability and the size of the local population at similar levels to those that occurred before the construction of the Santo Antônio do Jari dam.
