Abstract

The homeric digressions about the numerous minor heroes killed in the Iliad were interpreted by some critics as superfluous episodes added by later poets and by others as beautiful ornaments whose aim is to aliviate the boredom of the extensive and repetitive battle scenes. The catalogue of those who have fallen in combat suffers with even more criticisms to its form, allegedly poor, primitive and irrelevant to the full narrative of the poem. Believing in the opposite hypothesis, that the attention given by the poem to these minor figures is not inappropriate and even less a mere ornament, instead that its a fundamental part of some of the fundamental themes of the Iliad, the heroic death and the lamentation of the dead, this research has the aim of understanding, through the lens of the Oral Theory, the functions that the catalogue of the fallen heroes perform in the narrative of the Iliad.
