Abstract

The goal of this thesis is to investigate, via the AdS/CFT duality, several out-of-equilibrium (real time) phenomena in strongly coupled plasmas that possess direct relevance for the phenomenology of the quark-gluon plasma formed in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. This will be done through the development of a new numerical code for numerical relativity that employs the characteristic formulation of Einstein's equations in spacetimes that are asymptotically AdS.
