Abstract

This document presents a proposal for a research project on energy management of residential installations. The energy management issue deals with traditional areas of electrical engineering, such as energy dispatch from generation and transmission power systems or demand control in large industrial facilities. More recently, considering the new scenarios of distributed generation (DG), especially small systems, and the increasing integration of intelligent systems in the electricity sector, power management issue has led to very interesting discussions and solutions much more complex than before. In this sense, the proposed work is to prepare the student of control and automation engineering to approach issues related to energy management in smart grids. In particular, the chosen scenario focuses residential installations with energy microgeneration system, typical loads and an intelligent power meter able to store and analyze snapshots and statistics of local installation, as well as to communicate with other subsystems of the electrical network or the internet. Possible methodologies for power management will be studied, as well as load disaggregation techniques that can assist in energy management. After the literature review, a computer simulation model will be implemented to assess at least one of the techniques studied for loads disaggregation and energy management in a residence. Therefore, we believe the work may indicate to possible future contributions in the area and significantly contribute to the formation of the student in a subject that although correlative, is not formally addressed in his undergraduate course.
